Bicephalous Kantharos

Athenian production dating from the beginning of the V century BCE

REF No. Ceramics, pigments, varnish
H 15 cm

A bicephalous cantharus with molded faces on the paunch : a maenad and a silene. The natural color of the terracotta is preserved on the two faces, though there is the use of black pigments to contour the traits of the faces, as well as white pigment to color the hair and the beard of the silene.
The neck of the cantharus presents somewhat of an ornamental motif décor in black pigment and varnish.
Restoration was performed on one of the handles. There are small fragments of black varnish.
